A plateau is the point at which your body has adapted to the workout thus no longer needs to burn fat to supply the working muscles. In other words you need to change your workout. Your workout will need to change on a regular basis in order to keep from reaching a plateau. Different people reach plateau's at different rates, on average I would recommend starting a new routine every 4 to 6 weeks. Working with a professional removes the guess work. They are able to recognize the warning signs of a plateau and make adjustments accordingly.
